I'm breaking the rules a little and doing albums.
1950sMiles Davis - Kind of Blue (1959)
Brilliant jazz. Not my favourite album of his, but my favourite was released in 1970 (Bitches Brew). This album is essential listening for anyone who likes music.

King Crimson - In The Court of the Crimson King (1969)
The first album by one of my favourite bands, King Crimson. Some consider it to be their best, not me, but it's still an amazing album.

Yes - Close To The Edge (1972)
This was an extremely hard choice, as the majority of my favourite albums come from this decade. I almost chose Relayer (also by Yes), or possibly Larks' Tongues in Aspic (By King Crimson).
This is also progressive rock, like the previous album, and possibly the best example of the genre. This album is epic in the truest sense of the word, containing only three long tracks (20 minutes, 10 minutes, and 10 minutes).
Interestingly, the drummer on this album (Bill Bruford) left after this album was released, and joined the previous band, King Crimson.

Afrobeat-influenced new wave, the best talking heads album.

Boredoms - Super
æThis album is the hardest to describe, it's a mixture of noise rock, psychedelic rock, and tribal-sounding drumming. It doesn't really matter, because however you define it, it's fucking brilliant. If you download any of these albums, I would recommend this one. (They are all great, but this is probably the most unlike anything you've ever heard.)

Boris - Pink (2005)
Doom metal, stoner rock, drone doom. This band have worked with both Sunn O)) and Merzbow, their collaboration with Merzbow, Rock Dream, is also great.
