Crytek CEO Cevat Yerl has today revealed that he believes the current generations of consoles has hit its technical peak.
Crysis 2 developer Crytek has been at the forefront of PC technology for a few years now. It's latest title Crysis 2 looks to set new benchmarks in console development.

Speaking to gamesTM as part of a round table on the future of games, Yerl stated, "I think that there is not much more possible on the 360 and PS3 at this stage. We’re already using a lot of squeezing tricks and smoke and mirrors to get the maximum we can out of the hardware. We’re pushing the boundaries already. With CryEngine 3 I think going forward we’re going to require a new generation of console hardware"

"With the next generation the convergence of GPUs and CPUs will mean you have greater-looking worlds," Yerl continued," but also better-simulated worlds. I think we need better animation technology, too – so, mo-cap but also physics-based animation technologies. We need better simulation of intelligent foot-stepping, anti foot-sliding; just balancing the characters better, and having them react believably."

Yes...

This current gen is where most old gens have died... So in normal generations there would be a new console now.

I wouldn't be so sure...

I mean, of all people I'm sure Crytek would know most about graphics and stuff. But nevertheless, they've not spent a lot of time with Xbox 360's or Ps3's to my recollection. I'm certain that there is always room for improvement in visuals, no matter what

This isn't a normal generation. There have been so many upgrades to consoles from last gen, and the tech will last longer.

A company who has not developed for any console until recently does not have any right to say "Current gen consoles are maxed out". I look forward to Crysis 2 but them saying this is like Barack Obama saying bad stuff about video games, when it can be proven that he knows nothing about them.

You see, Crytek has always pushed the the limits of every platform they are on, did you know that? I can almost bet you didnt..

Far Cry (1) was developed by them, and the graphics was far superior to anything on the market, on any platform.
Crysis was developed by them, and the graphics took 3 years to get good FPS (frames per second) on it.
Crytek is the first company to fully utilize, DirectX 10 and 11 to its capabilities.

They have 550 employees to compare with other studios:

Bungie: 180 (Halo)
EA Dice: 200 (Battlefield)
Turn 10: 120 (Forza)
Polyphony Digital: 140 (Gran Turismo)
Epic Games: 130 (Gears of War)
Santa Monica Studios: 110 (God of War)

Bioware: 500
Rockstar: 480

You see, Crytek has always tried to push the boundaries of the current products on the market. A thing a anime/Inyasha fapper wont understand...

No console has ever been "maxed" out.

God Of War arrived one year before the Ps3 and it's been said to be one of the greatest games of all time.

This statement just made me lose what little respect I had for those graphic whores called Crytek.

Yeah Crysis was shiny and all but it's story sucked donkey cock and it's AI was fucking terrible.

Graphics don't make a game immersive.

It's the story. Always has been and always will be.
