| I used to keep my power supply behind the TV where it would just be squeezed in. And since the whole room is carpeted, there was no way that the power supply could cool down and that probably cause my first RRoD. Now i keep the power supply next to the console and in a well ventilated area. | |

| Have it standing, the 360 have the most of the side as a cooling part. By having it on the side it will have a bigger risk to overheat.
My tip is to keep it standing, and dont put your feet up on it.

My tip is to keep it standing, and dont put your feet up on it. But standing it up will totally block the side vent which means less hot air going out of the console

My tip is to keep it standing, and dont put your feet up on it. Lying it down it better.Opens more critical vents. Plus i heard standing your 360 up scratches your disk.

Plus i heard standing your 360 up scratches your disk. I have worked on repairing 360 when i was in high school... the is not an air went on the "side", or under it. Its even designed to be standing up.... Dont you MS thought of optimising the design with performance? The complete side of the 360 will generate and cool down more then the airwents on the bottom of it. There is only one airwent on the 360, and its on the back side and powered by 2 * 8 cm fans. There is a fan drum inside the xbox to lead the air to the back. The side of the xbox works as a cooler. I asked a person when i was working there, he was working for MS and said the 360 will survive longer when standing. The disc-scratching isnt a big problem unless you accidently hit it when there is a disc in it. And if you watch youtube, most RROD that are shown are mostly from consoles that have been on there side....

Ive noticed that the 360 doesnt collect alot of dust in the wents... Compared to my computer but thats almost crazy I got a lot of fans on my PC: 2 * 12cm in the frontpanel 1 * 14cm on the top 1 * 8cm on the Processor 1 * 8cm on the graphics card. 1 * 12cm on the back 1 * 12cm on the left side 1 * 12cm in the powersupply.. So yeah... dust collector The PC would survive with just a fractions of the fans

| I have this small table that has 3 shelves It looks like this ___ |__| |__| |__| I put the 360 on top, the power supply underneath and all random accessories like controllers, keyboard, headset, etc underneath. This way, there's open space and no clutter so there's no overheating the 360 itself or the power supply and keeping the random bits like controllers underneath is just to keep it neat | |

| It's argumentable which is better but I stand my 360's up, same as the Wii.
The 360 traps heat when the console lays down and whilst you think the heat escapes, remember that heat rises. On top of that you should see what happens to the x-clamps over time when the machine is constantly laid on its side. The RROD and the 0020 error happen a lot more easily with the console on its side.
Upright the console has a better flow and better heat dissipation, the 360 heat is fine (that which is creates) but it leaving the 360 is part of MS' design fault.
DVD disc scratching is seriously something of the past and something that affected the Hitachi and Samsung drives, it's no secret MS use BenQ and Lite-on drives (actually now it's all Lite-on) because of the superiority they have over the older gen DVD drives found in earlier 360's.
Those who believe that the 360 draws a lot of air from the right side whilst laying down really need to see a 360 ripped open, the console hardly gets cool air intake, MS designed the machine much like the original to exhaust the air through the rear fans, never was it designed with intake in mind.
Edit: I noticed I never answered the general question lol.
I open my 360's and clean them generally (although they don't get as dusty as a PC or PS3), I continue to allow the console to breath and generally try to avoid the DVD drive from much use (HDD installs).

| Alot of people thing laying the 360 on its side makes for better ventilation but you have to remember the motherboard heats up faster because its laying flat, when the system is vertical the motherboard hangs in the air allowing more heat the escape, i have had 4 xbox 360's and never have had one red ring, and for the record i have had 4 because i choose to sell them and get the newer fancy model that comes out! | |
