While it seems like Nintendo can do no wrong during the holiday season, when they traditionally dominate the industry and shatter their own sales records, the honeymoon is over! Their arch-nemesis, Greenpeace, has once again slammed the gaming giant for not greening up their act fast enough.
Since August 2006, Greenpeace has ranked the top 18 manufacturers of personal computers, mobile phones, TVs, and game consoles "according to their policies on toxic chemicals, recycling, and climate change." Their latest rankings are in for January 2010.
The 18 companies are ranked on a 0-10 scale, and almost all of them are in the middle of the 3-5 range. Greenpeace seems to slam just about everybody, with only 2 companies able to break a 6/10 score. Nintendo is dead last (again) with a score of 1.4, but Microsoft is not far from the bottom, ranked 17th with a score of 2.4. Sony is in the middle of a 5-way tie (with Apple and others) for 5th place with a score of 5.1, while its mobile phone partner Sony Ericcson has climbed to 2nd place with a score of 6.9, for "top marks on toxics elimination."
It should be noted that Nintendo is commended for disclosing their CO2 emissions, using energy efficient AC adapters for the DSi, having PVC-free internal wiring in all its consoles, and banning and monitoring a few other toxic chemicals. But that didn't help their score, which hasn't changed a single point since the last ranking in September 2009.
Out of the big three game console manufacturers, Microsoft's was the only score to move at all, and it dropped from a 2.7 to 2.4, for "failing to support strong chemicals regulation."
In short, the January 2010 scorecard reads:
Sony: 51%
Microsoft: 24%
Nintendo: 14%
I do not get this at all. And why toxic and stuff. A cell phone is in there. WTF. How does it cause toxic and weather change. I think Sony paid them. The PS3 Slim consumes 34% less power than the older models. No toxic stuff. WTF. They got paid or are fanboys.
