I didn't notice this at 1st but if you are venturing through a system and run out of fuel, you lose Iridium when you make an emergency FTL drive to the nearest fuel depot. At 1st I thought the ship just made a jump without the player getting punished, but there is a prompt that shows up that says your resources were used to make the jump. It appears and disappears really fast. No wonder I kept running out of resources. Make sure you don't make the same mistake. (If you are playing ME2 or plan on buying it, in the future.)

Well theres a fairly large fuel icon on the top of the screen and you should be able to see when its 0%. Also if you want to be more fuel efficient, buy the upgrade as your ship will use less fuel when you travel.
