First off let me clear some things. I don't hate Mass Effect, I never got into the story (Because I never played the game enough to actually like it) but thanks to watching Darksydephil's playthrough of Mass Effect 2 made me want to play it again, and after forcing myself to play the game for 3 hours I am slightly more interested (probably even more if I actually beat it) and wouldn't mind completing it. Anyway, onto my review.
Story
"We impose order on the chaos of organic evolution. You exist because we allow it, and you will end because we demand it."-Nazara
Humans are newcomers to the galaxy and to a Galaxy wide power of Alien races known as the Alliance and is looking for acceptance into their council. You are Commander Shepard (First name chosen by you). To sum up the plot you are this thing called a Specter that has to go out and destroy this human hating alien named Seran, his Geth followers, and this Giant ship Nazara. They want to activate the Mass Relays that will send the Reapers to the galaxy and wipe out civilization (as quoted above) when it is advanced enough. Pretty strait forward, you also have a team of varying species that help you and work towards the same goal, you can also have sex with them depending on influence and gender. Which makes me think that you won't always say "what would I do in this situation" more like "what can I do to make the crew want to fuck me". Also for some that is the reason they bought the game. Anyway, there are also a million and 1 side missions and loyalty missions, plus a large galaxy to top it off. Something I will say now is that if you love star wars you will probably love this (especially if you are like me and had to
force yourself to play it to eventually slightly like it), as pretty much everything is based off of that and other things as well, like Halo.

Gameplay
"...my biotics were always enough to get me out of any situation I put myself in... "-Liara T'Soni
There are multiple aspects of gaming to go through. These mostly depend on class. First is shooting, which is in Third-person (making this game a hybrid genre), where you aim and shoot at the target, usually behind cover with a cover system. Next are biotics which are the Mass Effect copy of Force powers, the problem here is that becuase it is the xbox version you can only map 1 to a hot key and for everything else you must pause the game and select a new one. After that is Hacking which isn't always that good and is sometimes a guessing game, but sometimes strait forward. Last is tech powers that involve healing and hacking. I personally did not like the overheating weapons, I prefer clips, luckily for me this problem was fixed in Mass Effect 2. Something I did not like about the gameplay was the artificial difficulty, meaning that allies don't heal you when they clearly should be able too, and bosses aren't actually hard, but either have a lot of heal or are only hard becuase you need to fight a wave or so of enemies before fighting them. From personal experience, the game's AI is not the best, and make many errors that could sometimes result in your death, can be
very annoying.

Graphics/art
The style is slightly unique, looks a lot like star wars though, mixed with classic space sci-fi. Not that original. Something I did not like that Bioware did to cut corners was that, yes, they made the galaxy big, but some of the planets are the same with a different environment skin. Sure that would have taken longer but if you were going to do that in the first place at least don't make it noticeable.

Music
Probably the most original and most under appreciated part of this game, it is very good.
Not a bad game, but even with my new found interest, I still like Star wars and Halo more, still good though, the game is also hard to get into, you would need to play it for about 5 hours before you actually get into it.
