How do you play First-person shooters on a PC?

Subject: How do you play First-person shooters on a PC? Sun Aug 01, 2010 2:29 am

I tried playing Quake 3: Arena on the PC just a couple of minutes ago. And it was confusing, now I do not understand how anyone can play FPS's on the PC. First you can use the mouse and keyboard, but its confusing because say you wanna run, jump, and aim at the same time. I cannot think of a way you can do it without feeling awkward. Someone tell me how you play FPS's on a PC?

ugh, 4 fingers on left homerow. Thumb on spacebar. right hand on mouse. Thats they easiest way to put it.

Middle-finger on W (forward)
Ring-finger on A (left)
Index-finger on D (right)
Pinkie-finger on left Shift (sprint)
Thumb on Spacebar (jump/stand-up)

R (mostly reload, in most games)
E or F (Use in most games)
Q (Ring-finger) (Voice commands in Battlefield series) otherwise its lean.
Z (use for proning)
C (often used for changing Camera view)
ctrl (control) used for crouching
left Shift (running/sprinting)
V (Knife in COD)

1 Primary Weapon
2 Secondary
3 Grenades (sometimes G is fro grenades)
Most games use the wheel on the mouse to switch weapons aswell.

Only a noob would mess it up Wink

Never use a laptop when playing games on a PC.... The keyboard is not made for it.

However you need some coordination with your fingers... maybe...

Just do what Blixt said, however change the WASD to ESDF, it just feels more natural and some of the people I've told to do that agree with me. Just keep playing and you'll get used to it. Or if it bothers you that much just use your 360 controller.

PC FPS games. Console FPS games I am more good at.

shooters are helluva lot better with a controller but the keyboard isnt that hard to use.Its not good but its not bad

QFT controllers > mouse and keyboard

But for RTS games or some RPGs mouse and keyboard make more sense

Actually, there is auto-aim. If I could remember right, I think HL has auto-aim, but you have the option to turn it off. Some shooters are designed for auto-aim. If you want to play Halo without auto-aim, try to kill your marines while running and gunning, it's not easy to keep your aim steady especially when they are moving places to places. If there's an auto-aim option, I usually turn it off. Console games do have similar option, and no not every shooter have auto-aim.

FPS is one of the genres that is far superior on the PC. I would take a keyboard and mouse over a controller any day.

I dont care if it takes more skill,its a pain in the arse and when I play a video game it SHOULDNT be a pain in the arse."oh we are soo good,we are playing shooters with harder controls" well screw you,the 360 controller is perfect for shooters and I can actually ENJOY the game.

Naw its because I wanna play Crysis. I would never sell my 360 (unless it was to get a 360 Slim).

It's not that hard. Just get used to it!

I used to prefer controllers over kb/m, but then I took a typing class where I learned how to type better and we got to play halo pc trial(it was a training excercise where we leaned how to us keys without looking).

I prefer keyboard mouse for most games on pc, with the exception of fighters/racers

I prefer keyboard and mouse over the controller. Just lets me be more immersed in the title that I'm playing.

The typical layout aswd to move, mouse to turn and shoot.
