PostSubject: MLD Archives #4: 2006......the year that changed everything.   MLD Archives #4: 2006......the year that changed everything. EmptyMon Aug 09, 2010 8:43 am

The year of 2006 is, by far, my favourite year as a gamer. There were great games of course like any other year but what makes it the best in my eyes was that the foundations that we gamers stood upon were shattered forever within that year. Everything we thought the gaming industry was, was changed. Each of the three console manufacturer corporations did something that year that all of us thought was previously crazy to think of. The actions, the reactions, and the results that changed the landscape of the industry even to this day are what makes 2006 my favourite year in gaming history.

1. Nintendo splitting the market.

Nintendo by far made the biggest splash that year and without question changed the way we gamers think about playing games. What I am referring to of course is the introduction of motion control as the standard method pf playing games. Sure we have been exposed to peripheral gaming in the past, but the dominant console controller system has always been a game pad, until Nintendo decided to do something about it. Nintendo took game concepts such as Mario (Mario Galaxy), Zelda (Twilight Princess), and Metroid (Metroid Prime 3), and successfully implemented motion control gaming into the game play that was previously only played with a traditional game controller. Nintendo made casual offerings such as mini game collections such as the Mario Party series and the Wii Sports franchise that also put the motion control gaming method to good use, albeit in bite sized doses. Overall, the announcement of Nintendo in 2006 that they would be taking the motion controller route for the main method of playing Wii games, a method that for once required moving your body/limbs as opposed to sitting still on the couch, is what really shattered the minds of gamers as to what gaming should be.

They have also successfully broadened the definition of what it means to be a gamer. Before this generation, all consoles catered to a hardcore market. Sure every console had casual offerings and obvious cash-ins on children's movies/TV shows. However there is no question that the majority of the library was meant to cater to a predominant male youth demographic, with exceptions to the rule of course. Nintendo, for the first time in gaming history, announced a console that would cater to people who never gamed in their life, people who casually game, people who only play video games at social settings, or people who used to play video games but stopped. This market, the overall dubbed "casual" market, is according to Nintendo an untapped market that the industry has largely ignored. Now what I am about to write may not agree with you but I feel it must be said: Nintendo Wii offers core games to their dedicated fans, but they clearly take a back seat (a minority) compared to the vast majority of Wii titles meant for the "casual" market. For the first time in the industry history, Nintendo catered to the casuals first and the core second. Only in the past year or so has Nintendo truly stepped up the release of 1st party franchises that appeal to die hard Nintendo fans. As a final note, this actually split the market so that Nintendo's market share wouldn't negatively impact the Xbox 360 or PS3. Both those console would fight over the core market while Nintendo reaped the rewards of the untapped markets of the casual gamer. This way, All comanpies can be successful unlike previous generations that fought over the same market in a three-way battle.

Finally, Nintendo defied all logic by keeping the Wii with the relative console horsepower of their former console, the Gamecube. Traditionally, it was understood that each generation must have consoles that surpass their former console by leaps and bounds in terms of power and features, but especially power. While the Wii does offer more features then the Gamecube via the Wii Network and does have a wildly different control input method, the actual power of the Wii was only slightly more capable then the Gamecube. By comparison the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 were vastly more powerful then their predecessors. Nintendo did this because they felt that they couldn't directly compete with Microsoft and Sony in terms of power or else they would fail again like with the Gamecube. Simply, Nintendo decided that if they want to appeal to casuals, the price must be low, as casuals aren't serious enough gamers to spend three hundred dollars or more on a gaming console. And, to make a console at a low price, what better way to keep costs down then to make a console that doesn't have cutting edge graphics technology? The beauty part of it all is that casuals don't care about graphics, merely the game play, which made Nintendo's decision to use dated graphics technology all the easier. The point is basically that Nintendo changed the definition of what it means to be a "next generation" console.

2. The fall of a giant.

For the past two generations Sony dominated the gaming industry. Playstation 1 and Playstation 2 were the undisputed winners of their generations, getting all of the games and market share, thus leaving the scraps to the competition. Sony and even the gamers as a whole, thought they could do no wrong. The Xbox 360 was all ready released but nobody paid any attention to them because they knew that when Sony released the Playstation 4 that everything out there would fail miserably. The PS3, believe it or not, was actually scheduled for the release in the spring of 2006. Sony delayed the launch to fall of 2006 due to problems manufacturing Bluray components of the PS3. But it was fine for the gamers as a spring launch wasn't an ideal time to launch a console. Faith in Sony was still high. The turning point for Sony; the moment they started to loose their thunder was E3 2006. This is the moment many of us will never forget. It was here that Sony revealed the price of the PS3.....$599. This was a price many young gamers simply couldn't afford for a hobby. Excuses were made for those with disposable income but the general consensus was that Sony was taking advantage of their fans by charging an absurdly high amount for a gaming console (the PS2 launched at $299 by comparison). The entire presentation simply showcased empty promises and games that didn't look anything special. Sony even hurt their own image in the eyes of their fans with such infamous quotes as "Riiiiidge Racer" and the "Enemy Crab" game play.

But after E3 things the bad things didn't stop there for Sony. Numerous news posts reported that Sony was having trouble manufacturing the components of the PS3, leading to a launch of limited models available. There was also reports that the Europe launch was delayed to March of 2007, and that it would not only cost more but have less features then the North American PS3.

Finally when the PS3 launched the results were clear: Sony isn't what they used to be. The launch titles were buggy and even broken. The 360 versions however proved to be smoother and overall better game experiences then the PS3 version. This is where the gamers started to bash Sony for making the PS3 hard to program for. This rumour is still associated with the PS3, even to this day. The PS3 exclusives were nothing special, with the only exception being Resistance. The people were seeing that the Xbox 360 wasn't such a bad console after all. It was cheaper, had a years worth of games on the PS3, had superior multiplats in comparison to the launch PS3 versions, and the exclusive Gears of War simply got more hype, better reviews, better graphics (shattering the propaganda that PS3 had an all powerful graphics engine), and was generally considered more fun then PS3s flagship title Resistance: Fall of Man. PSN at the time was also vastly inferior compared to Xbox Live. In 2006, Sony claimed the PS3 to the the undisputed superior console of that generation. When 2006 was done, almost nobody save the die hard Sony fans, agreed with that claim. The giant fell and to this day has not reclaimed any position other then last place.

3. The rise of the American made console.

The most successful American made console was the Atari. Since then the industry has been Japanese dominated, at least in the sense of who manufactured consoles. Then Microsoft comes in the industry, a move that surprised many. The Xbox can be considered a success; after all Microsoft beat Nintendo in their first generation in the console market......but still failed in comparison to the PS2. This generation, Microsoft released first to get a head start on developer support and console sales. Nobody would have thought in 2006 that Microsoft would still hold victory over PS3, the other "core" console. Microsoft kept building on the foundation of Xbox Live, which is still today the best console online network one could get. They pioneered console achievements, downloadable titles (for consoles), and community features that many of us take for granted. Finally in 2006 was the release of Gears of War. This game was AAA, showcased what the 360 was truly capable of, and soon became a flagship franchise that Microsoft immediately secured for the sequel. It also defiantly stood in the way of the PS3, which people were beginning to see was full of empty promises and under delivering. Gears of war was considered better looking, had better reviews, and was generally considered more fun then Resistance. Even though Resistance boasted 40 player online battles where as Gears of War only had 8 player matches, Gears still was triumphant in that gamers simply kept buying the game over the PS3 title. This showed gamers and Sony that more players doesn't equal more fun. Hopefully after the commercial and review flop of MAG, Sony can actually learn that lesson. The point is that this is the first time since the Atari that an American console manufacturer has been a major innovator and player in the console market. This is a trend that hopefully won't change anytime soon.

In conclusion, I love 2006. Not just for the games, but for the stories and memories.
