Back in the 90s, Duke Nukem 3D was possibly one of the best first-person shooters out there with the likes of Wolfenstein 3D and Doom. It was pretty much very similar to Doom at its basics, but it's just hard to not label this game a poor Doom-clone since there was a lot of care during the development in the game. Duke Nukem 3D is by far a great example of old-school first person shooters with quality and to this day with the new games out now, it's still worth playing. The game also had a reputation of having some very adult content like you will encounter strippers or semi-nudity.
The story is sooo simple. You're flying in your spaceship, all of sudden, those alien scumbags take you down and now you're out for revenge!! What do you? You kill them all! Yeah, typical FPS storyline.
The beautiful city lights.
Graphically, the game was lookin' really sharp in the 90s with textures, models, and lighting effects were standard-fair for upcoming shooters after this game. The sound effect is all fine too. All weapons sound effect is appropriate, and the monster sounds hostile. Not really much to say about the graphics and sounds since it's all top-notch just what a very good first person shooter should have most of the time. Oh and the main theme song, how could I forget about that? Classic. That's all I need to say.
If you didn't have internet for porn back then, you could always bet on Duke!
This is my boomstick!
Duke it out!
Duke Nukem 3D plays like Doom and feels like it too. Run and gun, kill hordes of monsters, there are secrets, and find the exit. There are boss fights, and a good amount of variety in the enemies section. Some of them are pretty interesting in terms of design or how they are played gameplay wise. One thing that makes Duke Nukem 3D quite unique compared to other Doom clones is the great use of interactivity, you can break glass, Duke can say one liners at times (which they are hilarious), you can destroy a somewhat broken wall to find secrets, and so on. It basically took realism to the next level with all this interactivity, and it's actually one of the good things why this game is the game it is today other than it's satisfying gunplay. The gunplay it's very enjoyable and it's just very rewarding to get kills with your shotgun which you will be using quite a bit, and the game never feels like it's too cheap, or too easy, it just has the right balance in the difficulty setting. Unless, you play on "Damn, I'm Good" difficulty which is basically the Nightmare difficulty from Doom. The guns are pretty standard fair, the good shotgun, pistol, chaingun, rocket launcher, and then you got some more memorable weapons like the Pipe Bomb, the Shrinker, or the Freezer. Both Shrinker and Freezer are very unique. Shrinker can shrink an enemy, and then you kill him by using your foot to stomp on him. The freezer can freeze enemies, and after use your mighty foot, to kill them! Most of the levels you'll be encountering are outside of cities to going inside an alien ship to various buildings that you can go inside in the city levels. Duke Nukem 3D also have an inventory slot, so you can carry various items that the game gives you at time ranging at jetpack to a medkit.
The Xbox 360 has online support, you can play co-op, and it features this new theater mode which you can come back in time and reboot yourself if you died. I didn't really use it since I played this game so many times, I can pretty much blaze through it pretty fast without needing to save or load that much.
If you're looking for a game that just has the same quality as Doom, Duke Nukem 3D is definitely a must-purchase for you. It's really fun, enjoyable, arcadey, and the humor also makes it funny too. Not much too say about this game, but why aren't buying this game? I mean, it's very cheap nowadays, and trust me you are getting a lot of bang for your buck with this game. 10/10
