Listen to the song "Dirge". It's impossible to find on YouTube, but it's a beautifully deep and dark song. The music goes so well with the lyrics to present this feeling of tragedy and unrelenting passion. It's really one of the few songs I can call "beautiful" and it always leaves me with an empty, sorrowful feeling after I listen to it.
Definitely one of Dylan's best songs.

Alright. I'm sure you've heard at least a couple songs off of it. You've probably heard "Forever Young".

Yup. So shallow.

Btw let's look at one of your favourite band's songs.
Quote :
Lady Supermarket with an apple in her basket Knocks in the manager's door; Grooning to the muzak from a speaker in shoe rack Lays out her goods on the floor; Everything she's chosen is conveniently frozen. Eat it and come back for more!
Lady Window Shopper with a new one in the hopper Whips up a chemical brew; Croaking to a neighbour while she polishes a sabre Knows how to flavour a stew. Never need to worry with a tin of 'Hurri Curri': Poisoned especially for you!
No use to complain If you're caught out in the rain; Your mother's quite insane. Cat food cat food cat food again.
Lady Yellow Stamper with a fillet in a hamper Dying to finish the course; Goodies for the table with a fable on the label Drowning in miracle sauce. Don't think I am that rude if I tell you that it's cat food
Oh my.... so deep, so emotional. Cat food. :') What a wonderful masterpiece!!
Yeah, unlike you I don't judge musicians upon their Languge talent but actually their musical talent.
I assumed you were referring to rap being lyrically shallow, with the themes of a lot of rap being purely misogyny and money.
I give you props for managing to pick a song from my second least favourite King Crimson album, I'm going to guess you tried to find the worst possible lyrics of the band. I judge music on whatever I hear, both lyrics and music. Some things I listen to more for lyrics (rap included, although the music and production of lots of rap is great, Bob Dylan) and some I listen to mostly for the music (King Crimson, Miles Davis, Yes, Genesis).
Here are some King Crimson lyrics I like.
Your admirers on the street Gotta hoot and stamp their feet In the heat from your physique As you twinkle by in moccasin sneakers
And I thought my heart would break When you doubled up at the stake With your fingers all a-shake You could never tell a winner from a snake but you always make money
Easy money
With your figure and your face Strutting out at every race Throw a glass around the place Show the colour of your crimson suspenders
We would take the money home Sit around the family throne My old dog could chew his bone For two weeks we could appease the Almighty
Easy money
Got no truck with the la-di-da Keep my bread in an old fruit jar Drive you out in a motor-car Getting fat on your lucky star just making
Easy money
King Crimson - Easy Money (From the album Larks' Tongues in Aspic)
On the subject of being "weird" or "not supposed to make much sense", I wouldn't describe the lyrics to Nightmare either of those things. The lyrics were extremely literal and easy to understand.
No I'm talking musically, rap is rarely any good. Sorry for picking a song on your second least favourite king crimson album. You picked a song from my second least favourite A7X album. Worst lyrics I could find? I typed in King Crimson lyrics on google, clicked on a site that had multiple songs and clicked on one of them randomly.
And those lyrics aren't that great ..... imo of course.
Check out these A7X lyrics:
Quote :
Man's becoming more corrupt now, godless, wicked, and cruel The soulless man stood silenced, Mary's words rang so true Chastisement worse than the flood, spread the word, it's all through Don't kill the messenger girl As if we haven't swam enough in this life of misery
Voice your prophecy, shed us some light Feel sorrow for mankind's chance to survive Swallowed lies and swam in our own tears A stab in the dark but it wounded our will We won't be here tomorrow, hold on to me for one last time
We've grown into the numbers six hundred sixty six War breaks, a sign of the end, eternally expelled Look to the sky for knowledge, the stars align tonight Eclipse and heaven shall fall Now I know I've seen it all in my life of misery
Voice your prophecy, shed us some light Feel sorrow for mankind's chance to survive Swallowed lies and swam in our own tears A stab in the dark but it wounded our will Dust the apple off, savor each bite And deep inside you know Adam was right lust and power, indulgence, no fear Left with his sins, how does this end? We won't be here tomorrow, hold on to me for one last time
As the prophets shed the light on what's to come the crowds did gather Your time is precious, they explained, no time to worry, messiah's coming Don't go to sleep tonight, darling, hold me in your arms These will be our final days and I can't let go
Walls are falling, churches burning, women ravaged, children crying Flesh is tearing, some still fighting In this world of misery
EPIC.
And these lyrics, about war and the effect it has on the ones involved:
Quote :
Staring at the carnage, praying that the sun would never rise. Living another day in disguise. These feelings can't be right, lend me your courage to stand up and fight, on tonight.
Ooooo.... Stand up and fight.
The fighting rages on and on, to challenge me you must be strong. I walk your land but don't belong, two million soldiers can't be wrong.
It's no fun but I've been here before I'm far from home and I'm fighting your war. (Not the way I pictured this, I wanted better things) Some are scared others killing for fun, I shot a mother right in front of her son. (Take this from my consciousness, and please erase my dreams)
Fight for honor, fight for your life. Pray to God that our side is right. Even though we won, I still may lose Until I make it home to you I see our mothers filled with tears, grew up so fast where did those years go? Memories wont let you cry unless I don't return tonight.
So many soldiers on the other side, I take their lives so they can't take mine. (Scared to make it out alive now murder's all I know.) Nobody tells me all the reasons we're here. I have my weapons so there's nothing to fear. (Another day, another life, but nothing real to show for)
Fight for honor, fight for your life. Pray to God that our side is right. Even though we won, I still may lose Until I make it home to you I see our mothers filled with tears, grew up so fast where did those years go? Memories wont let you cry unless I don't return tonight.
Staring at the carnage, praying that the sun would never rise. Living another day in disguise. These feelings can't be right, lend me your courage to stand up and fight.
Watching the death toll rise wondering how I'm alive. Stranger's blood on my hands, I've shot all I can There are no silent nights, watching your brothers all die To destroy all their plans with no thought of me No thought of me, no thought of me
Ohhhhh.....
Walk the city lonely Memories that haunt are passing by A murderer walks your street tonight Forgive me for my crimes; don't forget that I was so young Fought so scared in the name of God and country
Look at the contrast from verse to chorus. There are lexical sets like: blood, destroy, haunt, rage, etc in the verse which drastically changes in the chorus into: honour, god life, right, etc
It's a masterpiece. And that's just the lyrics. The music itself is pretty technical and beautiful. Just because it's not your kind of thing it doesn't mean they're not talented and can't right good music. A7X foREVer

A7X have such shallow lyrics in their songs. They feel so devoid of passion. It's like they said "We need to make a song about the ugliness of war so that we seem compassionate." Their songs are so basic and BORING. "Ooooh, we're dark."

lol You could say that about any war-related song. But now you're judging the band upon the people they are and their intentions. Are we forgetting we're having a MUSICAL argument here?
I mean, first there's criticism about the lyrics, now there's criticism about their motivations. Honestly....
And before you judge A7X and claim they're just doing this for attention, in actual fact it was written about their own friends. Listen to what he says right in the beginning:

Their motivations play a big part in it. You could write the most lyrically brilliant song, but if there's no passion or emotion behind it, then it just feels empty. Avenged Sevenfold just feels empty to me.

The artists motivations need to be taken into account, it's all part of the music.
Would Fela Kuti's Zombie have been so brilliant and cutting if it were performed by Blink 182? No, because there would be no feeling behind it, as they haven't experienced what he is describing.
You also seem to imply that the lyrics of a song should be taken completely separately from the instrumentation, but everything should be viewed as a whole package. The voice is just another instrument that can be used to reach the artist's goal.

lol that's just your opinion man. It was Avenged Sevenfold's passion that drew me into them. Every song by them, the vocalist pushes himself to his limits. Pours out so much emotion into every note! The guitar parts, instead of some boring simple riff, most of their songs (from City Of Evil in particular) have amazing guitar melodies, unlike any I've heard before, amazing lead lines that sound great but they also have powerful songs that really pack a punch. In fact, I think A7X are the most passionate, emotional (but not emo) band out there. Listen to Betrayed. The third and fourth lines alone could bring me to tears.

A whole package? Fine, bring up these rules. But so far you've not given me a single valid point that shows A7X are anything less than an excellent band. In fact, you've shown me rap, easily the worst genre around, and some very basic lyrics and used them to try and help your case. Now I'm even more certain of how good A7X are

Fela Kuti was a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, who played Afrobeat music. His album Zombie, and the song of the same name, heavily criticized the Nigerian government, which resulted in the killing of his mother by Nigerian soldiers. On the subject of musical passion, he was pretty damn passionate.
You criticize "basic" lyrics, but I think that Avenged Sevenfold's lyrics are about as basic as it gets. To me, they sound like something written by an angsty 14 year old. Want complicated?
Darkness at the break of noon Shadows even the silver spoon The handmade blade, the child’s balloon Eclipses both the sun and moon To understand you know too soon There is no sense in trying
Pointed threats, they bluff with scorn Suicide remarks are torn From the fool’s gold mouthpiece the hollow horn Plays wasted words, proves to warn That he not busy being born is busy dying
Temptation’s page flies out the door You follow, find yourself at war Watch waterfalls of pity roar You feel to moan but unlike before You discover that you’d just be one more Person crying
Bob Dylan - It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) Not the whole song, just the start.

Oh poor Fela
Those Bob Dylan lyrics are good. But I'm not denying there were better musicians. Of course there were. But these days A7X seem to be one of the only bands that are truly passionate and are able to appeal to metal-fans but are also able to put many other influences into their music. They have such a diverse catalogue of songs. It's unbelievable. You may not like their music but I get blown away by every single song by them I hear! The moment I put their self-titled album into my cd player, the moment the first guitar part exploded into life... I knew they were to become my favourite band. I was a huge 30 seconds to mars fan and then when I came to have to decide between 30 stm tickets or A7X tickets I had to just go for A7X. Their music is perfect to me. We obviously have different tastes in music (though we agree that the big 4 are overrated lol and that BMTH aren't very good) lol. I guess you'll never understand the appeal of A7X. Ah well, no loss. A7X have been my favourite band for around 3 years now and I'm certain they'll be my favourite band for many many years to come. They cover every tiny detail of what I want in my music:
Variety of styles Mainly guitar-orientated A vocalist that has good vocals and really pushes himself Good guitarist/s with lots of guitar solos Good drumming (R.I.P Jimmy Sullivan - but Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater's doing fine for the moment) Good live shows (they didn't always used to be that good but they've made massive leaps in improvements over time) Catchy songs but not simplistic Epic, usually long songs with loads of different parts. Songs you can listen to literally thousands of times and never get bored of
Those are the things that I look for in a band. That's why Avenged Sevenfold's music will always be a part of me.

Black Sabbath are considered metal. Hell, even Led Zeppelin, some of their songs are considered metal. A7X are of a similar style but slightly heavier.
Btw Pantera are f*cking awesome but Walk is a shite song.

"Walk" > "Message in Blood" ; but I do agree that Cemetery Gates is awesome. I also love "Domination" and "Cowboys from Hell".
