Kinect Hacked To Play World of Warcraft

Fans of the popular "World of Warcraft" game have now been able to control their characters via hand gestures and body movements, all thanks to researchers from USC hacking into the Microsoft Kinect! The new technological development from Evan Suma and his team could open the door for some very helpful new concepts along with the Xbox accessory.


The Microsoft Kinect (pictured via Amazon.com) is the extremely popular new video game accessory that works along with the Xbox 360 video game system. It includes a special motion sensor camera which allows video game players to control movements in the games just by moving their body. There's absolutely no controllers involved, which is quite different from the motion games that Nintendo Wii and Sony Playstation have.

The hack, seen in the YouTube video below, was made possible thanks to an open source framework tool. Wired.com reports that OpenNI helped the University of Southern California research team to create another program that in effect allows players to plug their Kinect into the PC USB port. Their software, Flexible Action and Articulated Skeleton Toolkit or "FAAST," allows the Kinect sensor to pick up a person's movements and translates them into fighting and spell-casting on World of Warcraft via their computer. This is a pretty amazing new technological development, albeit a hack and not in conjunction with Microsoft or the people who created Kinect.

Of course this opens up loads of possibilities, both good and bad. The bad is probably best left unsaid, although certainly there will be people trying to merge porn with the Kinect. It leads one to wonder if classic video games like Frogger, Centipede and Pong will soon be connected with Microsoft Kinect. As a person in the video below notes, this also opens up the possibilities for combating childhood obesity and diabetes, as well as providing rehabilitation services for potentially chronic injuries.
