Since the HD-DVD vs Blu-ray format war was won by Blu-ray, Microsoft have repeatedly denied plans of having a Blu-ray player, saying that they believe the future will be in digital distribution.
In a recent interview, it seems that all those previous denials, were false. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer had this to say on the matter:
"Well I don't know if we need to put Blu-ray in there - you'll be able to get Blu-ray drives as accessories."
When Gizmondo contacted Microsoft about this reveleation, they recieved the following answer:
"Our immediate solution for Blu-ray-quality video on an Xbox 360 is coming this fall with Zune Video and 1080p instant-on HD streaming. As far as our future plans are concerned, we're not ready to comment."
While this isn't a direct confirmation of an external Blu-ray drive for Xbox 360, it is a slight hint at what Microsoft may have in store in the coming Months/Years.
