A new Xbox 360 exclusive being released in the states.

Well its not new but the announcement is. It was only released in Japan in 2009 and now its getting a US release date. Its from vgchartz.


Some of the biggest and most niche assets of the Xbox 360's library are its' SHMUPs. Fans of the genre know what I'm talking about - the 360 has Mushishimesama Futari, Otomedius Gorgeous, Espgaluda II: Black Label, DoDonPachi Dai-Oujou: Black Label Extra, DeathSmiles, and others.

These games are famous for two things. Being insane bullet-spam fests is one, and almost never getting out of Japan is the other. Among what I've listed, none have done so up until now.

Siliconera tells us that a Publisher that prefers to remain unknown (but is one that should be familiar to who reads the site, so, I guess it's the usual publishers of niche Japanese games - Atlus, Xseed, NIS America, Aksys Games, or others) has picked up the game for localization... which is great, as DeathSmiles is an excellent horizontal shooter - featuring great music, imaginative art, and enemies coming at you from both sides - for extra challenge (as if just one wasn't enough).

Don't just take my word for it, though - here's a sweet trailer to vouch for its' strong sides.

I hope this is just the start of a Japanese SHMUP localization chain - everyone should get a chance at enjoying good ol' SHMUPS - a genre mostly dead in our day and age. At least in the West.
